Thank goodness, it’s summer! Warm weather, longer days and, at least for those on the Eastern Shore, endless supply of one of the best free activities—beaches!! The Eastern Shore is blessed to have a wide variety of places to take in the sun- from the avid swimmer to the wader to the sit on the sand and read tanner.
When we think of beaches on the Eastern Shore we automatically think Ocean City! With its seemingly endless strip of beach, hustling boardwalk, array of mini golf places and amazing food, it seems wrong to go a summer without making a stop there. However, there are other places that are worth a look. Below are just a few:
- Assateague Island National Seashore: With ocean and bayside beaches, Assateague has a lot more to offer than just beach. Nature trails, wildlife, kayak tours and sightseeing cruises are also fun things to do. And of course, keep an eye out for the wild horses!
- Calvert Cliffs State Park: A little longer drive will get you to this day use park where there are fossils, nature trails and strips of beaches. This beach is perfect for our Littles interested in geology and history. More info here.
- Betterton Beach and Ferry Park: Located in Kent County these bay beaches are great destinations for our Upper Shore Matches and our Littles who aren’t strong swimmers. No waves or riptides make it a safer alternative to the crashing waves of the ocean.
- Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis: A 786-acre state park with swimming, picnic areas, bird watching, fishing piers and much more! There is plenty to do here for those Littles who don’t like to sit or who get bored and need to switch activities frequently. Learn more here.
